EMBA Student Profile: Tuck School of Business
By QS Contributor
Updated UpdatedTopMBA.com talks to Nazeem Dharamshim about deciding to do an EMBA, and why he chose Tuck School of Business.
What were you doing before your MBA?
Manager at Accenture in their retail practice
What were your main reasons for deciding to attend business school?
I realized that I needed to do something to continue current career trajectory and felt MBA was best route to achieve this.
What research did you undertake in selecting your school?
Used league tables, talked to friends and colleagues who had been to business school, talked to several headhunters that I use to glean their thoughts on schools. This led to a shortlist of 10 schools which I each visted over a 2 week period.
What were the main criteria in your selection?
- Reputation
- Variety of courses
- Facilities
- Culture/feel of the school
- Opportunities for my partner. She was completing her PhD and the University to have certain texts and manuscripts as well as give her access to them.
Why did you decide to study either in your own country or overseas?
Choose US for several reasons.
a) Decided that 2 year course was best for me. Felt that with a 1 year course, the focus turns almost immediately to job hunting.
b) 2 year courses in the UK only gave me the option of LBS. As I lived in Regents Park I felt that this would not be much of a change for me.
c) Spent some time in the US and was keen to return . Also wanted to keep the option of working in the US open.
d) Facilities in US universities far outweighs those in the UK
e) Forward pricing of the dollar indicated that a US MBA would be significantly cheaper.
How well do your think the MBA is regarded in your home country?
Those in banking and private equity know it very well. The alumni base is small in the UK but very effective. I have never not had a reply from an alum when I have reached out and they have never taken more than 24 hours to reply.
Common mistake in the UK is to confuse Dartmouth, the ivy-league US university with Dartmouth, the naval academy!
Have you already been, or do you intend to become an entrepreneur?
Yes, I have set up and run several businesses including a wine trading company which exported wine from eastern Europe into the US and property development firms.
How much do you expect to earn on graduation?
I have kept my old job open and so my salary will be 120,000 GBP plus benefits.
