Hi, I'm Elen from Switzerland. I finished my college degree here in our country but I have desires of joining my brother abroad to take up another course. I have not taken my GMAT yet so I am hoping for your suggestions and tips before taking the test.

GMAT stands for Graduate

GMAT stands for Graduate Management Admission Test. GMAT is a standardised computer-adaptive test which measures verbal, mathematical and analytical writing skills. The test is designed to help management schools to assess the calibre of applicants to succeed in the MBA programmes they take. GMAT is basically an aptitude test that assesses fundamental quantitative, reasoning and verbal skills – and therefore does not require any subject-specific theoretical study. GMAT is developed and administered by Pearson VUE under the direction of the Graduate Management Admission Council (GMAC), a non-profit organization of graduate business schools worldwide. To conduct the test, Pearson VUE has appointed testing centres in various countries. The fee to take the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) is US$250 worldwide. You should note that test fee payments for online test appointments can only be made by credit card or debit card.
GMAT is an aptitude test which anyone can take; this test has no age or qualification-based constraints. GMAT test scores are valid for five years. However, while applying to B-Schools, it is always better if your scores have been obtained within the last 2 years. GMAT exam format is divided in four sections. These four sections are namely Verbal, Quantitative, Integrated Reasoning and Analytical Writing Assessment.

‣ Analytical Writing Assessment:
The purpose of this section is analysis of argument. You are given one topic in this section which you have to analyse. This section tests your ability to critique an argument based on assumptions you are given, the evidence that you give in support of the conclusion, the counter-examples that may weaken the conclusion and the overall structure. The time limit for this section is 30 minutes.

‣ Quantitative:
This section makes you deal with questions on problem solving and data sufficiency. The time limit of this section is 75 minutes. This section consists of 37 questions which include 19 problem solving questions and 18 data sufficiency questions. This section measures your ability to reason quantitatively, solve quantitative problems, and interpret data.

‣ Verbal:
This section has many key elements like critical reasoning, reading comprehension and sentence correction. You need to be thoroughly prepared in order to do well in this section. The time limit for this section is 75 minutes. The section comprises of 41 Questions. This section contains 13 questions about reading comprehension, 13 questions about critical reasoning and 15 questions about sentence correction. The GMAT exam format is such that it tests your ability to comprehend data, form inferences, reason and evaluate arguments & correct sentences so that they conform to standard English usage.

‣ Integrated Reasoning:
This section also has some key elements like multi-source reasoning, graphics interpretation, two-part analysis and table analysis which are tested. This section has time limit of 30 minutes. This section comprises of 12 questions distributed in topics like multi-source reasoning, graphics interpretation, two-part analysis and table analysis. This section tests your ability to convert quantitative data between graphical and verbal formats; assimilate information from different sources (emails, tables etc.) to solve problems; accurately interpret graphical or tabular data to determine probabilities and statistics; recognize tradeoffs and the likelihood of outcomes.
The total exam duration is 3 hours 30 minutes. So prepare well according to the GMAT exam format and do your best in those 210 minutes.

To be honest, there isn't a big difference between various test prep companies. We're all pretty much covering the same material and the strategies aren't that different (if different at all) .
Yes, most legitimate companies cover everything you need to know to score 800 on the GMAT.

Hello. My name is Yerlan. I am from Almaty (Kazakhstan). Me and my friend here had chosen to take GMAT and we want apply for some 1,5 year MBA program. We want to pass GMAT test. Our goal is to get scholarship at some good business school in USA or Canada. We have no experience at GMAT at all but we both have some background. We both have higher education. We analyzed materials available for GMAT preparation; also analyzed Amazon ratings for different books, and decided to buy one of these:

“The Official Guide for GMAT Review 2016” - 840 pages (with Quantitative and Verbal review from Official Bundle it will be 1392 pages)
Or
“Manhattan Complete GMAT Strategy Guide Set” – 1912 pages

We are planning to apply to some business school in January 2016. Roughly, we have 4 month to prepare. We have a question to GMAT experts. Can you please give us some advice what will be better to choose for preparation taking into account our current level and available time. Is it possible to get high score by preparing with “The Official Guide for GMAT Review”? I am afraid that we won’t be able to be in time if we go with “Manhattan Complete GMAT Strategy Guide Set” because we have 4 months for preparation.

4 months – 120 day.
To finish Manhattan Guide it will take 15 pages per day.
To finish The Official Guide it will take 7 pages per day ( or 12 pages if it is whole bundle)

Based on your experience can you tell us what will be better to go with in order to prepare for GMAT. We want high scores because we really hope to get generous scholarship.

Hi there,

GMAT test prep is clearly a big market, but perhaps your first port of call should be to have a look at the official guides and software offered by GMAC (which will contain practice questions used on the actual test) and see if this can help.

We have two sections of the website dedicated to entrance exams for business school - here and here. Personally, i can only suggest that you have a flick through and see what advice suits you best from those who have been through the process. Best of luck!

Hi Keval,

It’s a bit unfair to call it ‘negative’ marking – the GMAT uses a very complicated algorithm to mark papers so there’s no easy answer here. However, according to research carried out by GMAC in 2012, it can depend on which section of the paper you are answering.

In the verbal section, its data showed no significant score difference between randomly guessing and omitting the same number of questions. However, in the quantitative section it seems leaving questions blank will affect your score more than answering a question incorrectly – therefore, here you should leave nothing unanswered even if it means guessing.

Of course, this doesn’t include the integrated reasoning and the analytical writing assessment (AWA) sections!

All the top business schools

All the top business schools require a GMAT or GRE score. The GRE has an easier quant section than the GMAT, so you might get a better score on the GRE. Take a practice GRE exam to test out the quant section for yourself to see if you do any better than the GMAT.

If your goal is to get into a top business school, a test score is a must. I would either retake the GMAT or take the GRE if I feel like I'm scoring better on practice tests than the GMAT.

It depends. Some reputable MBA programs are willing to waive the GMAT/GRE if you have some years of professional experience.
--IE offers a GXMBA w/o the GMAT. For their traditional MBAs, you can opt for the GMAT/GRE or an exam designed by the school.
--Golden Gate University (if you wanted to stay in the US) offers GMAT waiver to students with +3.5 undergrad GPA and a lot of other reasons. It may not make the best of school lists, but I happen to know quite a few GGU graduates who are in excellent positions in Silicon Valley.

I suppose a more comprehensive response requires to know what your goals are, how much experience you have, whether you want a traditional or non-traditional program, interested in international experience, etc.

Lastly, I would suggest a private tutor for the quant section. They'll give you an assessment to identify strengths/ weaknesses and teach you only what you need to know. It often comes out to less time and money than what a full GMAT prep course would take.
