The number one place? Boulder Colorado, naturally, followed by Wilmington, North Carolina and Greater Bridgeport, Connecticut. Smaller markets, it seems, fare well, with the Midwest standing out as the place to be, with lower costs and lower competition giving businesses an edge. The site looked at six indicators to get the results, split into those which look into the success of businesses (average revenue of businesses, businesses per 100 people and the percentage of businesses with paid employees – they point out that 23 million of 28 million US businesses are non-employer businesses) and the area’s overall economic strength (median income, median housing cost and the level of unemployment). A total of 183 areas with populations of over 250,000 and 15,000 businesses were considered.

Fixr.com map shows what people want to know the cost of and where

Cost-estimating website Fixr.com has released a world map looking at which items people want to know the prices of, by country. Okay, let’s clarify here – this is hardly an in-depth exercise in analytics. The map has been drawn up by using an autocomplete formula, looking for the most common instances of ‘how much does X cost in X’, which naturally is subject to a number of variables, not least of which is the rest of the world’s perceptions of said country. But it still makes for interesting, often entertaining and occasionally troubling reading. Some examples are ‘how much does a kidney cost in Iran?’, ‘how much does a prostitute cost in Brazil?’, ‘how much does a slave cost in Mauritania?’ and ‘how much does it cost to fly a MiG?’ in Russia.

BNP Paribas ordered to pay US$9 billion settlement

France’s largest bank, BNP Paribas, has been ordered to pay a record fine for violating US sanctions in Sudan, Iran and Cuba between 2004 and 2012, reports Businessweek. The bank pleaded guilty to processing billions of dollars of transactions across the three nations in the time period in question. BNP Paribas will also serve five years of probation as a result of the verdict, which comes in light of pleas for clemency from French President François Hollande. The news comes at a bad time for European banks, as confidence in UK banks approaches an all-time low, with a string of scandals proving an obstacle to attaining renewed confidence.

<span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_40 addtoany_list" data-a2a-url="https://www.topmba.com/blog/business-news-weekly-roundup-may-1-2015" field__item">
What is the true legacy of hosting the World Cup?

It is often argued by emerging nations bidding for the hosting rights of major sporting events that the so called ‘legacy’ of tournaments like the World Cup or the Olympics will help them to reach their development goals. Nations such as Brazil (World Cup hosts in 2014 and Olympic hosts in 2016), South Africa (World Cup hosts in 2010) and Qatar (World Cup hosts in 2022 pending the results of current investigations) are a few examples of nations which have made this case.

However, research from Oxford Saïd professor Dr Eamonn Molloy and K40 Group director Trish Chetty argues that in order for this to be case, an oversight body needs to be established to oversee infrastructure programs, to ensure that a clear and integrated strategy is drawn up and followed. They cite the example of South Africa, where a fragmented approach resulted in technical overdesign, naïve cost estimations and politics taking precedence over rational decision making. FIFA’s failure to communicate the scope and complexity of the task was cited as potentially damaging. Of the resulting six new stadia and four upgraded ones, six cost more to maintain than they generate in revenue, and five of these require ongoing taxpayer support. Some legacy:

“Failure to improve management of infrastructure around major sporting events means that the world’s sporting entertainment will be paid for by those least able to afford it,” reflected Molloy.

‘Queen bee syndrome’ theory disproved

In news that will surprise no one bar those who have been trapped in carbonite, Han Solo style, for the past 42 years, the so-called ‘queen bee syndrome’ – the idea that women in power will do their utmost to keep other women out of power and first put forward in a 1973 study – has been disproved.

A research team from Columbia Business School looked at 1,500 companies over a 20-year period, finding that female-led companies were more likely to bring more females into senior positions (The Guardian reports). Who’d have thought it? However, when a woman was given an executive role below CEO-level, the chances of others following them to executive level fell by 50%. “Women face an implicit quota, whereby firms seek to maintain a small number of women on their top management team, usually only one,” the researchers commented. “While firms gain legitimacy from having women in top management, the value of this legitimacy declines with each woman.”

Precedent encourages ethical behavior

Research from Chicago Booth professor Ayelet Fishbach and Rutgers Business School professor Oliver J Sheldon has found that people are more likely to act in ethical ways if they anticipate that there will be a temptation to act unethically in the first place, or if they understand how the act can be likened to other unethical acts. When not connecting the act to others, or being made to think in an ethical frame of mind, people are more likely to transgress. Simple, isn’t it?

In an experiment in which participants were divided into buyers and sellers of a New York brownstone, buyers were told to conceal their aim of destroying the building, while sellers were told they should aim to preserve it. Half of the sellers were told to think about a time they had cheated before. This half were found to be less likely to conceal the truth, with 45% utilizing duplicity to close the deal, while 67% of those who weren’t connecting the sale to previous ethical quandaries were happy to lie.

Another experiment found that participants were less likely to steal pens and other office supplies if they considered a handful of ethical dilemmas at the same time, or were made to anticipate an ethical dilemma in a writing exercise. “Unethical behavior is rampant across various domains ranging from business and politics to education and sport. Organizations seeking to improve ethical behavior can do so by helping people recognize the cumulative impact of unethical acts and by providing warning cues for upcoming temptation," said Fishbach.

FacebookXLinkedInWhatsAppEmailCopy Link
<img src="/sites/default/files/blogs/lead-images/business_school_research_roundup_june_10_2015.jpg" width="700" height="325" alt="MBA news" title="Forethought required for positive World Cup legacy, queen bee syndrome proved to be a myth, and pen-theft news. It has also released an overall ranking, topped by AT&T.

Here’s the top-five in the overall diversity ranking:

1. AT&T

2. Carolinas Healthcare System

3. When it comes to employers at which minorities and women can get ahead, the Dallas-headquartered telecommunications colossus seems to be way out ahead. Let’s take a look at the six different categories.

Recruitment

The first category is recruitment, looking at minorities and women as a percentage of new hires, and any formal policies relating to this.

1. AT&T

2. Carolinas Healthcare System

3. Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey

4. Verizon

Representation

The representation category looks at the proportion of senior leadership roles occupied by women and minority incumbents; companies with leadership pipelines to ensure diversity are given particular credit. Strides have been made in terms of female representation, Diversity MBA reports.

1. Colgate-Palmolive

2. Nielsen

3. Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey

4. Health Care Service Corporation

5. Bank of America

Succession planning

This category looks more closely at the pipelines that are in place to ensure that female and minority candidates are considered for leadership roles.

1. AT&T

2. Carolinas Healthcare System

3. The Clorox Company

4. The Nielsen Company

5. GE

Workplace inclusion & retention

Looking at employee engagement, workplace inclusion & retention is the category that measures a company’s dedication to diversity beyond just being able to show the numbers.

1. AT&T

2. Carolinas Healthcare System

3. Colgate-Palmolive

4. The Nielsen Company

5. Horizon Blue Cross Blue Shield of New Jersey

Accountability

The accountability category looks at leadership and systematic accountability, beyond CEO and board level.

1. AT&T

2. Carolinas Healthcare System

3. Intel

4. EMC

5. Jones Lang LaSalle

Board diversity

Board diversity has been identified by Diversity MBA as a growth area. The top companies in this category, it reports, average around 55% diversity.

1. AT&T

2. The Clorox Company

3. GE

4. Diageo

5. The global survey draws upon the huge pool of future advanced-level business education candidates who register on mba.com in preparation for sitting the GMAT, with this year’s report based on the responses of 12,000 prospective candidates.

So, what did this year’s findings reveal?

MBA or MSc?

One of the biggest questions hanging over the contemporary business education landscape in the 21st century is MBA or MSc? Specialized master’s degrees have dominated the discourse, but it seems the MBA still has an edge over these pre-experience degrees among GMAT test-takers (factoring in of course, the element of bias in the findings of a survey of a test very closely associated with the MBA).

A total of 40% of respondents were considering a full-time, two-year MBA, while 39% were considering the one-year equivalent. Part-time (23%), flexible (19%), executive (13%) and online MBA (12%) programs also figured. On the other side of the MBA or MSc dilemma, finance was most popular master’s (22%), followed by accounting (18%), management (16%), international management (13%), marketing (11%) and data analytics (8%).

Notably, 80% of respondents to the 2014 GMAC Corporate Recruiters Survey revealed they were planning on hiring MBAs, compared to 50% who said they were looking for master in management (MiM) graduates, 45% for master of accounting graduates and 44% for master of finance graduates. Those opting for the MBA are making a prudent choice.

MBA rankings: Not the most important factor

One of the findings highlighted by GMAC is the fact that while MBA rankings are certainly important to prospective students, they are certainly not the sole consideration for prospective students. Indeed, MBA rankings come lower in the list of information sources than schools’ own websites (this mirrors QS findings).

Study destination is also an important consideration, with over half of test takers indicating that they want to study outside of their home country. The US remains number one, but it is by no means as dominant as it has been in the past (66% of respondents indicated a desire to study there, compared to 73% in 2010 for instance), followed by the UK, Canada, France and India.

Different countries were popular for different reasons – for instance, those opting to study in Canada, Hong Kong or Australia, were looking for a friendly destination, while France, the Netherlands and the US were popular among those focused on accelerating an international career.

Choosing an MBA: Challenges and timelines

When choosing an MBA, financial issues are, as ever, the biggest hurdle. Nearly half of candidates are concerned that attending a business school will cost more money than they have access to, while the proportion who are concerned about taking on large amounts of debt stands at 44%. Notably, however, the report points out that both of these figures are down on the equivalent figures from 2010.

The timescale in which these concerns come to the fore is, on average, around two years – from the time an applicant first considered a school up until the point of application. There is, as one might expect, a good deal of variation in this – depending, of course, on aspects such as how financially confident an applicant is.

It takes, the report states, around three months for GMAT registrants to choose a program type, with 93% having a solid first choice school by then. In a note for schools, it seems one year before the application deadline is the time to reach out, while it appears to take nine months between an applicant drawing up a shortlist and sitting the GMAT.

Generational differences

One of the most interesting set of findings in this report is those looking at the generational differences between Millennial, Generation X and Baby Boomer respondents.

Some may come as less of a surprise – Millennials are the keenest users of Facebook and will use social media as a means of staying in touch with friends and family, while Baby Boomers are the greatest advocates of LinkedIn, and use social media in order to develop a professional network.

However, a series of binaries around the issue of business school culture is maybe a little more thought-provoking. Millennials are, for instance, keener for a school to focus on research, while Baby Boomers are more interested in teaching by far (Gen X falls somewhere in the middle, as they do consistently, it seems). The older respondents get, the more they favor a casual environment over a formal one, while younger candidates look for authority over egalitarianism, and a competitive environment over a collaborative one.

The full report is available on GMAC.com for registered users. The 2015 edition of the QS Applicant Survey will be released this summer.

Berkeley Graduate Assembly’s Graduate Student Happiness & Well-Being Report 2014 contains worrying findings relating to the mental health of the school’s graduate student community – to which, no doubt other schools would do well to pay attention. It was found that 28% of business students scored as depressed, who were also among the lowest in terms of life satisfaction and also the least satisfied with their advisors. On the other hand – perhaps unsurprisingly – they reported relative financial comfort and felt positively about their career prospects, both key predictors of students’ mental health.

Self-affirmation can aid performance when stakes are high

A study carried out by a research team from the Rotman School of Management, led by Dr Sonia Kang, has found that those in positions of low power may perform better in high-stakes negotiations by using self-affirmation techniques. A three-stage experiment culminated in an exercise involving a simulated sale in which the sellers were in a position of power, with the stakes raised by informing the participants that their negotiation skills were being gauged. Before the experiment, half of the participants were asked to write for five minutes about their best negotiating skill, the other half about their worst. The buyers (the position of lower power) who had written about their best skill fared considerably better when it came to negotiating a lower price. Writing down the affirmation is likely to be more effective than just thinking it, Kang said, but the thought alone would help – the affirmation doesn’t even need to be connected to the situation at hand.

Spending accelerated by expectation of higher prices

Research from professors at Chicago Booth, the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology and Berkeley Haas has found that consumers are more ready to spend in the short term if they expect that higher inflation is on the horizon. Using data from Germany between 2000 and 2013, they found that household spending on consumer durable goods increases if the value of money is expected to decline – getting the most of bang from their buck, if you like. This is a widely accepted theory (the bond-buying program of the European Central Bank is seen as an example of institutions attempting to leverage this tendency), but the research plugs a gap in terms of empirical evidence.

Tepper School of Business has appointed Kathryn Barraclough to lead its MBA program. Barraclough arrives from the Owen Graduate School of Management at Vanderbilt University, where she has served, since 2010, as director of the school’s master’s in finance program.

“Kate Barraclough brings an impressive and broad background, ranging from academia to financial services. Her achievements as a scholar, researcher and educational leader were fundamental qualities that led to her appointment,” said the Tepper School’s dean, Robert Dammon.

A former manager at KPMG and a PhD graduate of the Australian National University, Barraclough described her appointment as a “privilege”. Her role will see her chart the strategic direction of the Tepper School’s MBA and oversee all aspects pertaining to the program's administration, from admissions and financial aid to student and career services.

Highest faculty positions is where gender gap persists in AACSB survey

In this light, the Tepper School’s appointment is certainly one that increases the number of female academics holding key leadership positions at business schools in the US, at a time when the gender gap among business faculty still receives less attention than that of female student enrollment.

Indeed, the gender gap for administrative roles at assistant dean and director level have been narrowing, according to figures from the 2015 edition of AACSB’s Business School Data Guide, which show that women holding a role equivalent to ‘assistant dean or director: MBA programs’ now represent 46% of the total in the US and 48% in the world outside the US.

However, the situation is far less positive when considering the gender gap at the very top leadership position of dean and among faculty with full professor status, according to AACSB’s figures.

There have been some notable female appointments – both in the US and internationally – in the past academic year, such as at Rutgers and McGill Desautels. But, the proportion of female deans in the US has risen by a single percentage point since 2013-14 and still stands at less than a quarter, or 23%. Outside the US, AACSB finds a similar predicament in an average of just 22%.

Furthermore, while the gender gap at assistant professor level is said to be narrowing, at professor level, proportions of female faculty are often less than 25%. Some of the worst-performing subject areas found in AACSB’s survey of US schools include finance and real estate – where just 11% and 9% of faculty, respectively, are female. At the level of assistant professor, both these areas have proportions closer to 25%. By comparison, in the field of management, 41% of assistant professors and 27% of full professors are female. So, in all these instances, there is at least hope that we will see more progress in the near future.

<span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_40 addtoany_list" (entirely state-owned until 2013), the University of Oxford’s Saïd Business School has received an award for its work with managers at the helm of the postal service’s transformation into a privatized company.

The overriding aim behind programs developed specifically for Royal Mail’s needs by Saïd Business School has been to help the Royal Mail Group live up to its aims of being the most successful delivery company in the UK and across Europe. The collaboration began in 2011, with a program aimed at the group’s top leaders, before expanding to a second offering for middle managers. With participant numbers now exceeding 500, the programs are said to have had a strong impact upon Royal Mail’s business results and performance. Group HR director at Royal Mail, Jon Millidge, said that the partnership with Saïd Business School was greatly enhancing the skillsets of its managers.

“[The programs] help to provide our senior leaders with the tools and knowledge to implement our strategies, realize their leadership potential and harness this to drive change across our business.”

The accolade came in the executive development category of the European Foundation for Management Development (EFMD)’s 2015 Excellence in Practice Awards – awards that focus on leadership and development partnerships in the realms of executive education. Indeed, chief at work in forming programs that revolve around four-day modules on campus was the executive education arm of Saïd Business School.

Ashridge Business School also recognized in EFMD awards

A further UK winner in the EFMD awards – this time in the organizational development category – was Ashridge Business School, for its work with research leaders in healthcare on a project carried out with the UK’s Department of Health and 64 NHS Trusts.

“The commitment of participating research leaders has been outstanding. They have made the most of this opportunity to improve clinical research in their organizations - making it faster and easier and contributing to the health and wealth of the nation,” said Ashridge Business School’s Phil Glanfield.

Ashridge Business School and Saïd Business School were both named ‘gold award winners’ by EFMD; there was also recognition for Melbourne Business School and INSEAD in the form of silver awards.

The executive education division of Melbourne Business School won praise for its leadership development work with New Zealand’s main ambulance operator, St John. INSEAD meanwhile, was recognized for its efforts in helping agribusiness company, Syngenta, to improve its global sales and marketing performance.

Based in Belgium, EFMD promotes best practice in management development through its international network of members across 81 countries that include many of the said Rafael Ansón, the project’s leader and director of the Center for Management, Nutrition and Welfare at IE Business School. “Gastronomy also plays a key role in economy and in sustainability. It is proven that bad nutrition generates huge costs in national health.”

How does IE Business School rank in gastronomic terms?

As for the quality of food available at IE Business School…well, The Financial Times’ latest executive education rankings covers food as one of 10 indicators rated by course participants. For what it’s worth, the Spanish school places just inside the top 30 here, behind its compatriots IESE and ESADE, at a table headed by Stanford and UV Darden in the US and Switzerland’s IMD. Regardless, supporting a culture of good food, and its underlying economic effects, makes sense for the Madrid-based school, because of Spain’s renown in international cuisine.

“At IE we are very aware that the Spanish gastronomy sector enjoys a leading position worldwide, and how gastronomy has become a strategic sector for showcasing countries on the world stage,” the school’s dean, Santiago Iñiguez de Onzoño, said at the time of project’s launch, adding that, “Spain is listed among world leaders in a sector that is increasingly important from a management and economic perspective.”

The project, formed in collaboration with corporate partners, Banco Popular and the Telefónica Foundation, extends to activities and an online network in addition to its educational modules – all of which are designed to spark IE Business School students’ interest in pursuing healthy lifestyles. For example, new additions include snack-sized podcasts that take on a different topic in just two minutes and a series of interviews that showcase the views of experts in particular areas of gastronomy.

“Little by little, people in management are learning that they also have to think about personal needs, not just work requirements. It also brings improved bottom-line results, because a person who feels good is more efficient,” concludes Ansón.

<span class="a2a_kit a2a_kit_size_40 addtoany_list" GMAC survey brings news of those receiving early job offers.

MBAs fresh out of the class of 2015 secured slightly more early offers of MBA jobs than their predecessors in 2014.

More than half of this year’s graduating business students at master’s level, 59%, had received a job offer by the time of GMAC’s class of 2015 survey in March, up from 57% in 2014. This number was understandably more pronounced among domestic students – 70% of those studying in their country of citizenship secured an early offer, compared to 42% of international students.

In total, a little over 3,000 students responded to GMAC’s 2015 Global Management Education Graduate Survey, of which three-quarters were set to graduate with an MBA.

Differing experiences for one and two-year MBA students in GMAC survey

Among the survey’s MBA respondents, graduates of two-year programs fared better in securing early offers of MBA jobs than those of one-year programs. A total of 63% of two-year students landed early offers, up from 60% in 2014. Conversely, the proportion of one-year students reporting early offers fell from 45% in 2014 to 36% among the class of 2015. Notwithstanding this continuing decline (60% in 2012 and 53% in 2013, though it was as low as 27% in 2010), it should not be seen as surprising that more two-year students secure MBA jobs prior to graduation, considering the increased intensity of taking on a one-year program.

Elsewhere, GMAC’s results provide further evidence of employers’ interest in graduates of pre-experience master’s in management (MiM) programs. Among the respondents (5% of the total) who were set to graduate with this qualification, 59% had a job offer at the time of the survey – a notable rise on the 39% reported last year.

Of course, these statistics are not indicative of graduates’ success in finding jobs on graduation. What they can do, however, is provide some very useful signs of the types of MBA jobs offered to the class of 2015 and how students secured them.

Outcomes from early offers made to class of 2015

In particular, the survey flags up some very interesting results with regards to career advancement – the bedrock of postgraduate business education. Not all respondents were looking for new opportunities – about a third said they are returning to their previous employer. But, for those who were in the market for new opportunities, 37% received offers at a higher job level.

Among those who came into their degree from what they described as an entry-level position (28% of the survey total), 72% received offers at a higher level. Meanwhile, of the 55% of respondents who held a mid-level position prior to enrollment, 27% were set to advance to senior- or executive-level roles with their job offers.

In spite of the increasing options to study and pick up entrepreneurship skills at business school, those seeking to run their own business only made up 5% of GMAC’s class of 2015 survey. Of this proportion, 25% started a business during their program of study, 33% said they would do so after graduation and the remainder indicated that they were self-employed prior to enrollment.

Where then were those receiving early offers of MBA jobs heading? According to the survey, finance and accounting accounted for 28% of the offers received, while 21% were in the consulting industry, 19% from products and services, and 12% from the realms of technology. Smaller proportions of offers, of 7% and below, came from the manufacturing, healthcare, and energy industries, as well as from government and nonprofit organizations. These figures encompass all the survey’s respondents and not just those from MBA programs.

Sourcing and securing MBA jobs

GMAC’s survey also provides some insight into how students came to find these jobs. Respondents employed an average of five resources and tactics to secure employment, the most popular of which (in descending order) were applying directly to a company, networking with classmates and alumni, online job portals and an institution’s career services.

However, the methods that led to the most job offers were different.
