Top Business School Academics Scoop MBA Case Studies Oscars: MBA News
By QS Contributor
Updated UpdatedJoining in with the hype of the Academy Awards is UK not-for-profit organization Case Centre – dedicated to the promotion of the case study method – which announced the winners of its own MBA case studies ‘Oscars’ at an awards event this week.
The event, organized by the Case Centre, formerly known as the Case Clearing House, is in its 24th year and has a continuing aim to promote and celebrate excellence in case writing and teaching within business education. The winners of the awards were leading business school professors who had written the most effective MBA case studies.
Academics from IMD Business School in Switzerland scooped the top prize, with the MBA case study on SKF written by Kamran Kashani and former researcher Aimée DuBrule. The winning case was judged on its growth in popularity worldwide based on sales to individual organizations during the last year. IMD Business School's Kashani has been an award winner on four previous occasions including the Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method Award in 2011.
Case Centre ceremony recognizes Nirmalya Kumar, Harvard Business School
This year the Outstanding Contribution to the Case Method Award went to marketing professor Nirmalya Kumar of London Business School, who has also won awards in previous years and now holds seven in total including two overall winning case awards. Nirmalya Kumar has written a number of best-selling MBA case studies including one on easyJet which is one of the Case Centre’s most sold. “In writing a case, I take both the instructor and student perspectives and ask how this case will lead to a transformation of beliefs on the part of the students,” Nirmalya Kumar said when accepting the award.
Perhaps unsurprisingly the school with highest number of winners to its name was the US’ number one institution Harvard Business School, whose professors V. Kasturi Rangan and Sunru Yong along with Thomas Steenburgh, Jill Avery and Naseem Dahod won out in the award categories of economics and marketing.
Although North American Harvard Business School dominates the case study market, with over 85% of MBA case studies being written by Harvard Business School faculty, it was Europe which had the highest number of winners. France’s ESSEC Business School won in entrepreneurship with the case study entitled ‘Coach: To Be or Not To Be Luxury?’, Germany’s ESMT took the human resources prize, Austria’s WU Wirtschaftsuniversität Wien beat the competition in ethics, and a second French winner, Jasjit Singh from INSEAD, took the prize in the strategy and general management category.
