An overhaul of the MBA admissions essay requirements for the McCombs MBA program at the University of Texas at Austin's McCombs School of Business has continued a recent trend of US business schools modernising their admissions processes.

"For the 2013-2014 admissions season, we have dramatically changed our application essays from previous years," explains Rodrigo Malta, director of MBA admissions at McCombs. "Additionally, we are incorporating some unique submission formats this year. In our first essay, we are giving you the opportunity to express yourself in your preferred mode of communication. You can choose to introduce yourself using a more traditional essay, doing a short video or providing us with your about.me profile."

Reasoning behind the McCombs MBA Admissions Essay Change

According to Malta, the change in the McCombs MBA admissions essay requirements is designed to help the admissions team achieve:

•    Better understanding of what makes each candidate uniquely appropriate for the McCombs program.
•    Decipher how each applicant might become a part of the McCombs MBA community.
•    Find out how applicants plan to use the two-year program to develop professionally.

In the past two months, top US business schools that have dramatically altered their MBA admissions essay requirements include The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania, the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business, Columbia Business School, Harvard Business School (HBS), and NYU Stern School of Business.
