Sprott’s Master of Accounting (MAcc) is a program that provides a gateway to a career as a professional accountant. Students graduating from the MAcc will be exempt from the CPA Canada Professional Education Program (PEP) and will proceed directly to the CPA Canada Common Final Examination, which is one of the final steps in becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant.
Full-Time and Part-Time Study Options
The full-time stream is delivered over two consecutive summers of full-time study on campus in Ottawa and includes an internship and two online courses in the Fall term following the first summer of study. Students interested in Full-Time studies begin courses in May
The part-time stream is delivered in the evenings over 24 months and begins in the Fall term. All courses are delivered on campus in Ottawa.
Build an Integral Professional Network
Graduate with work experience through the MAcc internship (14-week minimum) experience in the private, public or not-for-profit sector. This may also be credited towards CPA Ontario’s 30-month practical work experience requirement.
Learn From Faculty with Extensive CPA Experience
The accounting faculty within the Sprott School of Business are experts on the competencies required by the accounting profession. In addition, MAcc candidates will have several of their cases marked, with extensive feedback provided, by professional case markers.

I am an Internationally Trained Accountant. Am I eligible to apply?
One of the MAcc program requirements is that a substantial number of prerequisite courses need to be taken at a Canadian Post-Secondary Institution. Due to this requirement, Internationally Trained Accountants cannot apply directly to the MAcc before having taken these prerequisite courses.
If you have already obtained a professional accounting designation from another country, you may qualify for getting the CPA designation in Canada without taking our Master’s program. Unfortunately, we are unable to provide advanced standing in the MAcc as the courses are not mapped directly to the CPA PEP.
What does “accredited by CPA” mean?
Upon successful completion of the MAcc program, students proceed directly to the CPA Common Final Examination, which is one of the final steps in becoming a Chartered Professional Accountant.
I have completed my degree; however, I am missing prerequisite courses, how can I complete them?
If you have not completed all of the prerequisite courses during your undergraduate degree, you have a few different options:
Carleton offers a Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting which is a 2 year online program that covers the core prerequisite courses. If you have further questions on this program please contact [email protected].
Alternatively, you may wish to complete one or more of these courses at Carleton as a Special Student. Find more information about becoming a special student on the Carleton Registrar website.
You can also complete the outstanding prerequisites through the CPA Preparatory Courses, or through another Canadian Post-Secondary Institution. Please review our MAcc Prerequisite Forms which lists equivalent prerequisite courses from various Canadian Post-Secondary Institutions.
I have completed my studies outside of Canada. How do I know if I am eligible to apply?
If you completed all or a portion of the CPA prerequisite courses outside of Canada, you will be required to complete the following prerequisite courses at a Canadian post-secondary institution:
Intermediate Financial Accounting I and II
Advanced Financial Accounting
Assurance
Taxation
Business Law
Note that all of the above courses with the exception of Business Law can be completed by registering in the Sprott Post Baccalaureate Diploma in Accounting.
