Online MBAs: Myths Dispelled
By QS Contributor
Updated UpdatedThere are plenty of myths surrounding online MBAs. Nicole Willson looks at some of the most common, and explains why they are, quite simply, just not true.
Myth 1 : Online MBAs aren’t as challenging as on-campus programs.
Reality: The best online MBA programs have the same rigorous curriculum as their offline counterparts. Additionally, to complete an online MBA requires high levels of discipline. There’s no one looking over your shoulder to ensure you participate in class or turn in assignments on time. Being a self-starter is, therefore, a necessity.
Myth 2: You need to be tech-savvy to do an online MBA.
Reality: While this may have once been the case, technology has become significantly more user-friendly since the days of the first online MBA programs. And if you do struggle, most offer around-the-clock support. Some online MBA programs even offer students the opportunity to take computing classes before they start.
Myth 3: There’s no one-on-one interaction with professors.
Reality: This really depends on the program, with faculty to student ratios varying between courses. A higher proportion of full-time rather than adjunct faculty also indicates an institution’s commitment to fully utilizing its resources to deliver the program. This is taken into account in the 2012 QS Distance Online MBA Rankings methodology, which awards a higher score to programs with stronger ratios and more full-time staff.
Myth 4: There are no participation requirements for online MBA programs.
Reality: Several of the programs in the QS Distance Online MBA Rankings require in-person residencies, regular attendance of online classes, and group projects. All of these, of course, play an essential role: residencies allow you to interact with classmates, professors, and support staff face-to-face, regularly scheduled online classes allow for more regular interaction, and group projects give you an invaluable experience of working as part of a team as well as the chance to learn from others.
Myth 5: Reputable business schools don’t offer online MBA programs.
Reality: Some of the world’s top business schools, such as IE and UNC, offer online MBA programs. Many of the schools listed in the online ranking are also included in the QS Global 200 Business School Report, a comprehensive rating that looks at how MBA programs are perceived by employers.
Myth: Online MBA programs don’t offer any networking opportunities.
Reality: Many schools require at least one on-campus residency as part of their online MBA program. Residencies allow you to build stronger relationships with your classmates, providing numerous opportunities for networking.
