MBA vs Masters? What Do You Need to Know
By Darcy Bickham
Updated UpdatedHave you started thinking about furthering your education but don’t know where to start? It’s important to know the key differences between a masters and MBA before deciding which program is right for you!
What field do you want to work in?
A major deciding factor in whether you should get your master's or MBA is the type of field you're looking to be in after completing your degree. An MBA is specifically focused on business, while a master’s degree can range from engineering, to technology, to business.
What’re you trying to accomplish with your degree?
Another thing to consider when making your decision is what you’re trying to accomplish with your degree. If you’re looking to build upon your career or add to work experience, an MBA might be the best option for you. If your goal is to build on your academic background, a master’s makes more sense. Typically, business schools are looking for candidates who have a couple years of work experience under their belt, while master's programs often take candidates right out of college.
Length of an MBA program vs master's program?
The length of the program also depends on whether you’re getting your MBA or master's. For example, MBA programs range from one to two years, while most master’s programs take about two years in the US and are typically one year in Europe. Both types of programs have options for online and part-time courses as well.
Benefits of a master’s vs an MBA?
Masters Degree: A master’s program is generally for someone who already knows what they're interested in and to specialize in a specific field. A master’s allows you to build expertise in one area and move up the career ladder in your field.
MBA: In an MBA program you'll often find people who come from diverse professional backgrounds and will be able to share their applied working experience from different business-related fields. MBA’s are good for those who are looking to switch their career path, take an executive position, or become an entrepreneur.
