Adding to the ever-growing options for applicants interested in studying on an online MBA program, the University of Maryland's Smith School of Business has announced its own online MBA offering.

Lasting 21 months, the first students to enrol on the Maryland online MBA program will begin their classes in January 2014.

Modelled on the school's executive MBA program, the Maryland online MBA will be predominantly delivered over the internet with two live sessions per week where students log into an online classroom in order to connect with the school's faculty and their cohort.

The Maryland Online MBA

With a proposed tuition fee of US$80,000, the Maryland online MBA program is comparable to other online MBA programs offered by top business schools, including UNC Kenan-Flagler's MBA@UNC, widely considered to have set the benchmark for top business schools entering the online MBA realm.

QS Quacquarelli Symonds launched the first report to rank accredited online, distance and hybrid MBA programs offered by the world's top business schools last year, called the QS Distance Online MBA Rankings. Though the MBA@UNC was at the time too young to qualify for the online MBA ranking's criteria, many other top business school's online MBA offerings did:

    1. IE Business School
    2. Warwick Business School, University of Warwick
    3. Manchester Business School, The University of Manchester
    4. Thunderbird School of Global Management
    5. Kelley School of Business, Indiana University
