This week Cambridge Judge Business School is hosting the Entertainment Master Class annual business management program as part of a new partnership that merges the practicalities of business with the art of show business.

Entertainment Master Class (EMC) is an industry peer-to-peer academy whose entertainment management program seeks to provide participants with the tools needed to run a successful entertainment company. Its creative faculty speakers and mentors include the man responsible for developing the popular TV shows, Strictly Come Dancing and Dancing with the Stars, Wayne Garvie, who is chief creative officer at Sony Pictures TV, and David Lyle, CEO of the National Geographic Channels.

This year’s program began yesterday, January 14, and runs until January 18. It features 22 entertainment management sessions in total, with daily focuses ranging from ‘running shows’ to ‘triggering creativity’. However, the overarching theme is that of the ‘entertainment entrepreneur’ with EMC posing the question, “How can you be an artistic entrepreneur, embracing your skills to run both your own show and your own business?”

Entertainment Master Class bridging the skills gap

The Entertainment Master Class program aims to bridge the gap between a professional business education and practical experience for those wishing to work in entertainment management.

“We need to understand both sides of the entertainment business: How to make the show and how to make the money,” said EMC’s managing director, Christoph Fey in a press release for Cambridge Judge.

In forming this partnership, the role of Dr. Allègre Hadida, director of Cambridge Judge’s MPhil in Management program and a strategy lecturer at the university, was crucial. Having spent much of her career analyzing the practice of entertainment management, Dr. Hadida is highly regarded within the industry and is excited by what EMC has to offer Cambridge Judge.

“The real excitement is that, from January, the Entertainment Master Class will make its main home here with us at the Cambridge Judge. When it comes to business principles and practice – and the entrepreneurial spirit – the entertainment industry is as much in need of professional support as any. Perhaps more so, as the emphasis in show biz has traditionally been on the ‘show’ – the creative side of things – rather than on the business,” said Dr. Hadida.
