Harvard Law professor Ashish Nanda has been appointed as the new director of IIM Ahmedabad, one of the leading and best-known MBA business schools in the Asia-Pacific region.

Taking over from Samir Barua, Nanda is the first professor from an overseas school to take up the role of director in IIM-A’s history. After teaching professional services in the MBA program at the Harvard Business School for 13 years, Nanda has been most recently employed at the Harvard Law School where he is faculty director of executive education as well as research director of the Legal Profession Program. Previously he has also held a position with Tata Administrative Services as well as working as an advisor for various law firms. Nanda also boasts a strong academic background, having received gold medals from both IIT-Delhi and IIM-Ahmadabad and both his MA and PhD from Harvard University.

Experience in leading international schools

Given his wealth of academic experience and personal connection with IIM-A, Nanda was seen as a natural choice for the position, and his appointment has received great praise. As AM Naik, chairman of IIM-A states in a press release from the institute, "Professor Nanda, an alumnus with impeccable academic records, with decades of experience in leading international schools, brings in a right mix of international experience and familiarity with IIM-A. With his appointment as the director, I am sure, the institute will grow from strength to strength and chart new territories."

Though he is officially due to start on September 2nd, according to a press release issued by the IIM Ahmadabad, Nanda will be visiting the campus for a few days from the 15th August in order to familiarise himself with both the staff and students.
