The University of Oxford’s Saїd Business School this week announced that Dominic Barton, global managing director of McKinsey & Co., is to join the school’s board.

By joining the board for a term of three years, Dominic Barton will contribute to Saїd Business School’s strategic planning, designed to ensure the school stays connected with business leaders and remains influential in contemporary business practice. He is an Oxford alumnus, having completed an MPhil in Economics and has been a Rhodes Scholar of the university.

“Dominic’s unique experience of leading in global and challenging contexts will be invaluable in helping us achieve our aim to be a world-class business school community, embedded in a world-class university, tackling world-scale problems,” said Saїd Business School’s dean, Peter Tufano.

Dominic Barton: expertise in Asian markets

Saїd Business School’s new board-member has extensive experience of working with Asian markets. Before stepping up to the global MD role at McKinsey in 2009, Dominic Barton was chairman of McKinsey in Asia from 2004–09, based in Shanghai, and led McKinsey's office in Korea from 2000–04.

He has held a particularly strong relationship with the South Korean government. Having led an international advisory committee to former president, Lee Myung-bak, Dominic Barton was awarded the Order of Civil Merit (Peony Medal) in 2013. He is also the author of the 2007 book, China Vignettes: An Inside Look at China.

Dominic Barton, who is a Canadian citizen and originally joined McKinsey’s Toronto office back in 1986 after finishing his studies in the UK, spoke of his pride in extending his association with Oxford.

“The young leaders who study at the school are progressing their business careers at a time of great global change and challenge and I look forward to helping shape the school’s strategy to prepare them fully to lead their organizations,” he said.

Another long-term member of McKinsey, Orna NiChionna, has also been announced onto the board at Saїd Business School. Ms NiChionna, a Harvard MBA alumna, spent 18 years with the consultancy firm and has held directorships at HMV, Bupa, Northern Foods and Bank of Ireland UK. She is currently senior independent director of the UK’s Royal Mail as well as being a trustee of the country’s National Trust organization.
